North Shore Senior Center Offers a Variety of Programs and Special Events
Northfield Seniors and others will find a wealth of programs and events offered at the North Shore Senior Center located at 161 Northfield Road in Northfield. Some events and classes are free and open to the public, others require fees. Reservations are need for most events. Some of the classes and events being offered cover subjects that include music, politics, religion, dancing, sewing, history, use of computers and more. Following is a small sampling of some of the upcoming programs:
Upcoming Concerts An Afternoon with Mark Damisch--Sunday, July 12 at 4:30 PM. A sneak preview of Mark Damisch's concert tour to Iceland and France. Enjoy the music of Beethoven and Chopin as well as Gershwin's An American In Paris. A practicing attorney, former Mayor of Northbrook and a successful concert pianist, Mr. Damisch has traveled to many countries, giving his talent and beautiful music to raise money for worthhile causes.
Four Young Talented Performers from the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago perform Sunday, August 30 at 4:30 PM. Come hear four talented young singers from the professional arts development program for Chicago's Lyric Opera, recognized as one of the finest programs of its type in the world, perform arias, duets and other opera works. The most popular NSSC concert of the season!
NSSC Day Trips Trip to Geneva to Catch a Kane County Cougars Game--Friday, August 7 from 4:30 to 10:30 PM. Regarded as one of the most popular minor league teams in the entire country, the Cougars combine great baseball action, unique on-field entertainment and fan-friendly atmosphere. Enjoy the game at Elfstrom Stadium and savor some of the finest ballpark food around. The evening will end with a fireworks display. Price includes game ticket and deluxe motor coach. $40/NSSC members, $55/non-members. To register, call 847-784-6030.
Programs House of Welcome Artwork on Display. Artwork created by House of Welcome Adult Day Services' participants will be on display at the Northfield branch of the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library during the months of July. Stop by and see it at 1785 Orchard Lane in Northfield.
July is Elder Abuse Awareness Month in Illinois. It is important for the community to be aware that Elder Abuse affects all races and ethnic groups. Elder Abuse is defined as financial exploitation, neglect (including self-neglect), or physical/emotional abuse. Illinois law protects and supports victims of abuse and even provides help for overly stressed caregivers who may be the abusers. If you suspect a situation of elder abuse, report your concerns to the North Shore Senior Center, 847-784-6040, or the Illinois Elder Abuse Hotline, 1-866-800-1409.
Services and Opportunities Volunteers Needed at NSSC. Volunteers needed to answer phones in the Northfield and Evanston offices. The work is a great way to meet the Senior Center staff, learn about the programs and services and use your telephone and organizational skills. North Shore Senior Center's Handyman Program Provides a Helping Hand around the House The NSSC Handyman has the talent and exprience to tackle a variety of household projects and repair jobs. If you are age 60 or older (or disabled and any age) and live in New Trier or Northfield Twp., you can take advantage of this helpful service. A Handyman is available by appointment to work in a single residence for up to 3 hours per appointment. The Handyman does not perform services for which a plumber, electrician or contractor should be hired. The cost of Handyman services per hour is $39 plus the cost of any materials needed. Payment is due at the time of service. Some typical services include: replace light bulbs, re-light gas appliances and pilot lights, switch screens and storm windows, repair damaged electrical cords; free sticking locks, doors and windows; install grab bars, replace cabinet hinges or handles, move furniture and appliances, deliver goods to rummage sales, perform basic yard work, install smoke detectors, install window air conditioners, replace fuses, replace smoke detector batteries, assemble furniture.
